FASHION AND EDITORIAL
WITH JENNY DAYTON

Visiting tutor Jenny Dayton came to teach us some fashion editorial make up for a couple of days. I really enjoyed this as I had not done much fashion make up but I enjoyed the creative freedom that I had.

The make up was based on the concept of traditional henna tattoos for an alternative editorial magazine such as I-D or Flux.

Jenny explained the that the difference between commercial fashion make up and editiorial fashion make up - commercial photography is trying to sell a product whereas editorial make up can be more creative as it is not trying to sell a particular product.

INITIAL TEST

I decided that I wanted to base my henna style make up on a tree. Although I did not intend to use henna, is it would be on the face and my model would not appreciate it.  For my first attempt  I used a liquid eyeliner pen to draw the tree which worked really and made drawing the tree easier. I then decided to have a choker style band around the neck which definitely did not work. I also used my lightest MAC foundation NC15 but this was too warm for my model and did not go with my look. Next time I will use either white or the illamaqua white foundation.

I used this tattoo design as the basis of my own design. I also added a black flying crow which you cannot see in the final picture.

I was happy with my final make up. I used black eyeliner to fill the tree rather than grease paint which I used in my test which made it smudge. I also decided to add roots to the tree which I think look effective. I used the illamaqsua white foundation which I feel gave a good contrast to the black. I also used red on the lips. My model had a lot of layers in her hair which made styling difficult. I decided to use hot rods in her hair to give texture and pull it onto the top of her head. I am not very confident with hair however I am really happy with this style and think the make up looks effective over all.

This is an example of a commercial fashion make up - the make up compliments the product that is it selling (the watch). The colours ued are warm and reflect the colours of the watch. The make up is not distracting and the hair is simple, ensuring that the focus is on the product.

This is another example of commercial make up however this time the product being sold is make up and is therefore a little more experimental than fig. 43.2. Sephora is a young brand which is being reflected in this advert - the make up is the focus of the photo, with bright fresh colours.

These spectacular make ups are from the Alex Box Rankin book, they are full of creativity and are the kind of make up that if often seen in publications such as Bambi, Nova and Purple. Both looks are very edgey, with colour and straws in the hair of the left model and sharp layers cut into the model on the right. Both make ups are very painterly and bright. The right is very much in the style of a painting with brush strokes, with references to pop art with the bold black lines. Art often seems to be the inspiration of such mke ups - they in turn become pieces of art themslves.
