INITIAL MAKE UP IDEAS
For this project, I intend to explore the different ways that I could create scales using different make ups. These are my initial make up ideas, they will be my starting points and I shall experiment with. These may not end up being the make ups that I use for my final images.
MAKE UP 1 -
Experiment with latex to create scales, combining it with other iterms such as almonds, cornflakes and perhaps seeds to see how these may work.
MAKE UP 2 -
Experiment with using the product 'Fish Skin' to layer scales
MAKE UP 3 -
Create scales by airbushing using different stencils e.g fishnet tights
MAKE UP 4 -
Hand paint scales using greasepaints/skin illustrator
MAKE UP 5 -
Create 2 scaley silicone prosthetic pieces for the nose, brow and chin. I will then use the most effective of the above effects to create scales around these areas.

These are quick sketches of my 5th make up idea. I originally thought of creating this almost as a mask, with two pieces - one covering most of the upper face and the second as a chin piece. I have now changed my mind and have decided it would be best to create smaller pieces which would allow the performer (in this case model) more movement in the face. I also feel a mask-like piece may look unrealistic. Instead, I plan to create nose/brow and jaw pieces. I will experiment with ways to fill the other areas with scales and see which is most effective.
For this design, I have incorporated corn rows as I feel this links to my lizard theme as their scales are often going in this direction often with horns and 'bumpy' texture. I will research other ways I could braid the hair.

DEVELOPMENT OF INITIAL IDEAS
MAKE UP 1 -
I created a reptilian make up using almonds, bran flakes, pumpkin seeds and latex and tissue - I feel it was an effective result
MAKE UP 2 -
MAKE UP 3 -
I ran out of time to try using airbrushing over fish net tights however if I would try this in future.
MAKE UP 4 - I handpainted some scales on my arm using aqua colour rather than skin illustrator or grease paints as it was the most effective finish - colours were much brighter. I had not thought to use aqua colour initially therefore the experimentation was useful.
MAKE UP 5 -
I was initially planning to create a nose, brow and chin piece, with seeds place around the pieces. I decided that this would not work, as I had learnt from my research that some reptiles have scales which do not overlap and some have scales which do. In my design I had combined the two which I think would look odd. I decided instead to create a brow/nose piece, as well as two flat pieces to go either side on the forehead.
MAKE UP 6 -
I used fullers earth to create a cracked effect on the head and the hair. This effect worked well however eventually got too flakey to work on. It worked better on the skin than it did the hair.

KEY DESIGN
This is my overall basis for the make ups that I have created. Each make up is different to this however this is the idea that I have been working from. This is a design I have developed from the very initial sketch at the top of the page.
