AGEING RESEARCH

I have based my design on a person around the age of 75 - 80 and have therefore looked at people that are around this age as reference.

I have found Sean Connery a particuarly useful reference. My character is mostly bald and therefore I felt he would be a good reference, I found that he also had some good wrinkles. As he is mainly bearded, it was not so useful for the lower jaw lines and wrinkles.

From looking at various pictures of Sean Connery, I found that he has great transverse nasal lines (between the eyes) which I have decided to include in my design as I feel it will add interest to my make up. The picture on the right shows this wrinkle particularly well. The contrast of the picture also shows up his other wrinkles well such as the nasal labial folds, his jowls and transverse frontal lines (forehead).

I wanted to have pictures of Sean Connery at different angles to show more of his wrinkles and their form to help with my sculpting.

Actor David Carradine also has an interesting face with really defined temples and some nice age spots. I also like the fleshy appearance of his nasal labial folds and the hollow look of his cheeks which enthasise this.

I particuarly like the wrinkles around Carradine's eyes in this picture aswell as the pore texture on his chin.

WISDOM by Andrew Zuckerman

Photographer Zuckerman took portraits of well known mature individuals and interviewed them. These are excellent references for old age skin texture as well as male faces - I am creating a male character therefore male faces are crucial for me to study.

This portrait of Andrew Wyeth is my favourite in the whole book. It is almost as though his skin is melting from his face - it could be a great basis for an age make up.

This portrait of Chuck Close has been the most useful reference in the book for me as he is bald and I have designed my character to be bald. He has a prominent occipital bone - I have exaggerated my characters occipital bone and therefore this is a useful reference, particuarly with it being a profile view.

He also has great age spots - I plan to incorporate age spots into my make up.

This profile shot of Buzz Aldrin is useful for wrinkle references around his eye area. It shows clearly the primary and secondary wrinkles.

When sculpting, I used a combination of the profile view of Buzz for wrinkles and this front shot of Rupert Neudeck for the wrinkles around the eyes.
