AGEING MY FACE
I was really excited about this part of the project as I am keen to improve my sculpting skills. I gave myself plenty of time and began working on this early on so that I would not end up rushing it before hand in.
I started by cleaning up the sculpt by picking out all of the little bits of plaster that were stuck in it. I then had to rebuild one side of my nose as it had somehow collapsed during the casting. It took me a long time to rebuild the nose. I took reference pictures of my nose from all angles.
This was the initial result which is similar to my nose however was not quite right e.g there is no bump on my actual nose unlike the sculpture. I moved on from the nose for a bit after this and came back to it every now and then when I noticed areas that were not right.
I then filled in many of the cracks in the face by rolling tiny sausages and filling the gaps and then smoothing them out using my tools and some lighter fluid. I then started to work into the wrinkles around the eyes and crows feet. I also worked into the nasolabial folds and the oromental groove in corner of the mouth.
The main area that I have worked into is the eyes. I have quite hooded eyelids which is why I have focused on wrinkles on the lid. I have also started to think about other wrinkles on the face such as the transverse nasal lines that are found at the top of the bridge of the nose. I also smoothed the face to get rid of some bumps.
After watching the Stuart Bray skin texturing video, I decided to use some packaging plastic (rather than clingfilm which I had used before) and my tiny loop tool to create pore textures. I also created deeper wrinkles using this tool over the thicker packaging. Bray suggests then folding over the plastic wrapping several times and trying different pressures. I did this and felt it was effective.
My first attempt at texturing skin - after using plastic wrapping and tools, I then wrapped a stipple sponge in cling film and went over the texture I had created. I feel I could have smoothed out some of the face a bit more before starting to texture as in the above photo you can see some 'lumpy' areas on the side.
This is my finished aged face. I decided to age my face around 60 years old. I used my mum for reference as she is 57/58 and I was able to get some close up photos of her skin. The nose is still not quite the right shape and the left eye is slightly too droopy However overall I am quite happy with the result. I took my time over it and feel I have benefited from the exercise. I also found many useful texturing and sculpting tutorials along the way whilst creating this.
