DECONSTRUCTING WIGS

  • When cutting wefts, cut them so there is material around the weft - DO NOT CUT WEFT

  • If you do accidentally cut through weft, you can use glue gun - do not use too much glue as the glue is rigid and does not stretch

  • You can fold length to add thickness to weft

  • When deconstruction a wig, buy 2 - one that you can deconstruct and the other is the basis for the new wig.

  • It is not ideal to have a parting or a fringe as this makes the wig harder to work with.

REFRONTING WIGS

This picture shows where I have put my darts. It also shows my loosely sewn hairline which runs from the back of the left ear to the right ear. I then pinned across.

  • Pin wig further back than it is supposed to be - the saggy bit at the back can be sewn to get rid of it

  • Put net on block in the right place

  • There should be no darts on either side of the new hair line - 2cm either side

  • Lace must sit flat

  • Fold lace in half and line the middle with the centre

  • Do not put pins in the front lace - pin North and South

  • Knot as straight back as possible

  • Fold darts down to the left and down to the right

  • Get excess at the front flat ( anything fewer than 2 cms from hairline will be cut off)

  • Loosely sew thread of new hairline from the back of the ear to the back of the other ear

  • Mimic hairline, bulk knotting ( 3-4 hairs) every third hole, single knotting and sporadic reduced knotting.  Every third hole, every fourth row.

  • Pin in front of wig - not touching the wig.

  • Whip everything in front of the hair line

  • Once whipping is done, put wig on the block and pin lots of pins through wig onto the lace

Once my whipping was done, I then pinned through the wig into the lace. Hair would then be knotted from the wig to the new hair line.

I found refronting a wig a complex technique to understand and struggled to get my head around it.

CLEANING WIGS

  • Never put dirty pieces on your actor/performer/model. It is important to clean pieces to remove make up, perspiration and glue.

  • Do not use oil based remover

  • Use cotton wool with muslin cloth wrapped around - this avoids getting the cotton wool stuck

  • Dip pieces in acetone (moustaches and beards). Accetone will dissolve synthetic hair.

  • Use acetone resistant gloves - Marigolds

  • Put one acetone soaked pad below lace and one above
