LIFE CASTING RESEARCH

Debrecini recommends the alginate being at least 1/2 inch thick and no more than 1 inch as the weight will begin to pull it down. When doing my life cast, I feel that I made my alginate too thick as its weight did pull it down. I struggled to put enough aliginate over the eyes as it kept slipping downwards.

I also had air pockets around the corner of the eye - in future I shall follow contours of models face with alginate to ensure there are no bubbles.

Debrecini gives an alternative method for life casting the nose. He suggests asking the model to take a deep breath and hold it, the nose is then covered completely with alginate. The model is then asked to blow sharply to clear the openings of the nose of alginate. A craft stick is then quickly used to remove any excess alfinate around the nasal pasage. He suggests that if this particular method is chosen, then the nose should be done first so that the mouth is left clear so that it is possible for model to breath while their nose is covered.

I would be interested to try this method at some point in the future.

A bit of tension should remain around the mouth so that the weight of the alginate will not pull it down. 

Important to have an even coverage over the face with no thin areas - aginate as thick as possible around the edges, eyes and nose.

Algislo - created by David Parvin as an alginate retarder, bonder or softener. This will provide you with longer working time as it slows the cure time.

 

He also recommends adding cotton fuzz to the alginate before it sets as this helps the plaster stick to the alginate. I have not tried this method before. 

He uses slightly warm water with a pinch of salt as these both speed up the drying time of the plaster. It is important not to make the water too warm as this will inhibit or prevent the cure of plaster. White vinegar will slow the cure time of the plaster.

It is important to overlap the plaster strips with the thickest laters on the outside edge. Ensure that there is no airspace between the alginate and the plaster however do not press too firmly as this you may distort the alginate and in term distort the stone postive.

Many of these points will be useful in the future when I am life casting. It is particularly useful to know that water which is too warm will inhibit the plaster, it is also useful to know how to retard the plaster.

 

SILICONE LIFE CASTING

 

The above research is referring to life casting with alginate however other materials can also be used such as silicone. The process is similar to using alginate. Silicone A + B are added together in equal measurements and then applied in the same was as alginate.A plaster mother mould is then made in the same way as the alginate method.

 

There are benefits to using silicone over alginate, for instance, a wide range of materials can be cast directly into your mould. Silicone also bonds to silicone, so unlike alginate, it can be applied onto itself where as alginate will not bond to itself unless a bonder (such as Algislo) is used.

Life casting using silicone is however much more expensive than using alginate.
