BALD CAP RESEARCH
Fig. 53.
I am unable to upload the video but above is the link for a time lapse by Mark Coulier who applied a bald cap to Eastenders actress Lindsey. He used a silicone bald cap rather than a plastic bald cap.
Coulier makes sure that the wrinkles in the back of the neck are lined up and sculpted in line with the wrinkles on the front of the life cast.
This bald cap is coloured really nicely and there is no visible seam.
The Judge
Fig.
Test make up for 'The Judge' by Ken Diaz. Bald cap with punched hair.
This make up is stunning - absolutely seamless and so subtle that you can barely tell it is a make up. When watching 'The Judge' I did not even recognise that this was a mke up. The colouring - particularly the mottling, age spots and purple tones, look very natural.
i am a bit confused about why the top of the appliance is missing and why it s not a complete bald cap - will need to look into this. This picture shows the beautiful paint job of age spots.

How to Apply and Paint a Plastic Bald Cap by Freakmo
She struggles to get the hair flat without using clips - whichc show thorugh the bald cap and will push through and will prevent cap being smooth.
I hope to be able to avoid this by using Gafquat and flattening the hair without clips.
Her face paint layer is flesh coloured PAX paint. I am unsure of this and will research to see if other artists use this method. I would rather pre colour the cap.
Freakmo uses skill illustrators and splatters them for next layers. She starts using a 'blood' layer and then builds up the spatters with other colours such as 'Natural' & 'Olive Adjuster' as well ass some subtle 'Vein Blue'. She then highlights the cap with 'Ricepaper' The lightest colour in the palette.
Then she stipples concentrated Skin Illustrator onto any areas which still seem a bit too 'cap like' and have not blended so well.
Although it is hard to see in this image, there is some wrinkleage around the ear. This is something very difficult to avoid yet I would really like to get as little wrinkleage as possible in my cap.
Freakmo shows that the cap wrinkles when she movs her forehead. This is something I had not considered - I would need my model to be able to emote as the character would be for either TV or film.
It is interesting to see Freakmo use skin illustrator to layer colour on her bald cap. I intend to do this with the 'dark palette' as my model has a darker, caramel skin tone. She also glues the bald cap down methodically - Forehead first, then nape and then move to around the ears.

PENNY DELAMAR ON FITING & COLOURING BALD CAP
Delamar suggests using acetone if the skin is greasy as it will help the cap to stick better. Ensure no air is trapped inside. Use a powder puff to press cap down. Use wooden modelling tool to press the cap down behind ear.
Use both dark and red with a rubber stipple sponge or a natural sponge with lots of holes in. I will experiment with this, to see if it is the same for darker skin tones. It is important to stipple the red before the foundation layer. Delamar suggests using grease paint - powder must be used to set it.

PAM Bald cap demonstration
Although not specified, it appears the model has Gafquat in her hair to slick it down. The bald cap is later stuck down to the hair - this can be done using gafquat as a base. The demonstator sticks 1cm of the bald cap at front of the head, she explains that you should not stick the front fully as it will create wrinkles when sticking the rest. She uses prosaide as an adhesive.
Her bald cap is much bigger and she dissolves it down to size. She disolves a hole in the ear and then pulls ear through. She suggests bringing the cap down to the brow as people do not look fo ran ede there generally.
Prosaide is stippled over the edge to add texture and distract from any edge. It will also help the pax paint adhere.
The hair is flattened but has not been wrapped. iN the video she explains that this method relies on the model wearing a scarf or the leftover hair being covered by clothing. This is far from ideal and is therefore not helpful for me. I want my bald cap to be appropriate for screen -- my bald cap must be a high quality from all angles.
HAIR WRAPPING
This video describes itself as being a hairrap for under neath bald caps or wigs however I feel it is more appropriate for wigs. There are many visible slides and clips in the hair which would be seen through a bald cap.
I was struggling to find research on the ways that people wrapped hair successfully under bald caps. I had a tutorial with Carolyne where she showed me her preferred technique of hair wrapping - 'the walnut'. I rerecorded the process for my reference and found this very helpful.
