SPECIALIST PRACTICE

 

 

On completion of this unit, I feel that I have negotiated an appropriate body of work for a twenty credit unit. This allowed me plenty of opportunities for experimentation and subsequently allowed me to discover problems which I then had time to find solutions for.  I have utilized my time effectively by using a work plan which­­­ I have closely followed.  I have previously found time management a weakness of mine - this is the first time I have used a time plan.  I ensured that I followed the plan by updating it every day. I found this process to be incredibly helpful and intend to implement this in my Final Major Project. Through my research, I found that both silicone and cap plastic bald caps are used in industry. Initially I was therefore unsure of the best method for creating my flocked bald cap which led me to life cast my model and create a fiberglass core early on in the process. This was a contingency in case during my experimentation I decided a silicone bald cap would be more appropriate than a plastic cap. This could be viewed as wasted time however it was an important part of my process as my ideas developed. If I was to repeat this unit, I would spend that time developing my ideas and experimenting further instead. I would also spend more time on my eyebrow covers, as I feel I focused too much of my attention on the bald cap. However this project has shown me the advantages and limitations of a plastic bald cap as well as allowing me to practice my skills in making and applying plastic bald caps.

In previous units, I found that my research had not been extensive enough which had limited my final outcome. For specialist practice, I ensured that I thoroughly researched my project which allowed me to make informed project choices and apply my research.

In level 5, I lacked confidence in myself which caused me to be a rather dependent learner and rely heavily on the support of staff - particularly in my last unit where I attempted a project which was beyond my means. In comparison, I feel that during specialist practice I have demonstrated a high level of independent judgement. This was reflected within my project when I had issues with mattifying my adhesive on my bald cap. I did thorough research and experimented with all possible solutions before asking the advice of staff. I have shown critical awareness throughout the project by evaluating all of my tests and experimentations.

I have demonstrated a professional level of presentation by ensuring my makeup is fit for purpose and is appropriate for the context of a documentary style drama. I ensured that the edges of my make up were well blended and coloured correctly as well as ensuring my model could emote. I demonstrated a professional level of practice by collaborating with a model and a photographer. I visited various locations with my photographer prior to the photoshoot and gave her direction during the shoot to ensure that we achieved the outcome I imagined.
